About United Republic of Tanzania
Tanzania is one of the five East Africa Community member states within the African Great Lakes region. Bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north; Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west; Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south; and the Indian Ocean to the east. We are proud to count within our borders the African highest mountain, the Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m), in north-eastern Tanzania. The peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro is visible occasionally from Arusha as, and when, weather allows.
Swahili and English are Tanzania's official languages.
Arusha is a city located in Northern Tanzania, in the out skirt of the Mount Meru (4,566m), another of the top ten peaks in Africa. Also Arusha is known to be the North touristic capital, being the depart point for most of the safaris in this regions.
The current site of Arusha was first settled in the 1830s by the agro-pastoral Arusha Maasai from the Arusha Chini community, South of Mount Kilimanjaro. They traded grains, honey, beer, and tobacco with the pastoral Kisongo Maasai in exchange for livestock, milk, meat, and skins. Demand for Arusha's foodstuffs increased substantially during the 1860s when the Pangani Valley trade route was extended through Old Moshi, Arusha, and ultimately to Western Kenya. Although it was not yet a town, it was a regional centrer and had a number of urban features.
