How Stakeholders Engagement Led to Policy Change

Initially, the local context preferred framing the issue as "child protection" rather than "child rights." However, drawing on the skills and knowledge I gained from the training, our team effectively engaged with stakeholders and decision-makers. We successfully advocated for the adoption of a comprehensive Child Rights Law, which was signed into law by the Executive Governor of Borno State.

After completing the Public Policy Influencing and Advocacy course at MS TCDC, I returned to Nigeria, I became more actively involved in advocacy work in Borno State. One of my first major engagements was as a member of the Child Rights Implementation Committee. Our focus was on raising awareness and advocating for children's rights—including their right to education, their right to choose their future, and to be protected in their
communities.” ~ Ishaku Yohanna Balami, SPA II training participant.

This marked a significant milestone, as the law was formally domesticated in the state—ensuring stronger legal protection for children. Another key area where I applied the training was in policy engagement around climate change and smart agriculture. We worked with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Environment to advocate for farmer support and safety.

In our region, farmers often face violent attacks and even abductions while working on their land. Through sustained advocacy, we convinced the state government to provide agro-rangers for protection and also introduced transport support to ensure farmers could travel to and from their fields safely.

In addition, within my organization, we trained youth groups in budget tracking, education budget monitoring, and advocacy. We developed a set of policy recommendations which we submitted during the 2024 state budget planning process. I personally presented these recommendations in front of the Deputy Governor, who represented the State Governor. Many of our proposals were reflected in the final 2024 budget, which was a significant achievement for our team. Overall, the PPIA training empowered me with the tools to engage meaningfully with government institutions, influence policy, and contribute to tangible social change in my community.
